We repair and restore EA119 ALU– Charles and Ray Eames by ICF.
Charles and Ray Eames were commissioned by Eero Saarinen and Alexander Girard to design a high-quality seating product for outdoor use. The Aluminum Group chairs were developed as a response to this commission and featured a cast aluminum frame supporting a stretched synthetic mesh. The seat-back suspension was a major technical achievement and represented a departure from the concept of the chair as a solid shell.
Herman Miller began making the Aluminum Group chairs in 1958 and they have been in continuous demand ever since, although the original mesh seat – meant for outdoor use – was discontinued in the USA a short time after its introduction and replaced with the leather and fabric options still offered today.
From 1957, Mobilier International, Vitra, ICF and Hille all had permission from Herman Miller to produce Eames (and Nelson) designs under license for the French, German, Italian and UK markets respectively. Difficult trading conditions in Europe during the early 1980s allowed Vitra to monopolise on its strength and gain exclusive licensing rights from Herman Miller for the European and Middle Eastern markets from around 1985.
